Navy Seals Team 6

‎31 lost, 31 unwanted visits, 31 doors receive that dreaded knock, 31 families with shattered hearts, 31 pairs of boots lined up with rifles and dog tags and helmets, 31 comrades remembered and grieved for, 31 funeral services, 31 names on newly made grave markers, 31 empty places at the table, 31 souls who gave all, whose lives leave a void, so let’s take 31 seconds to pause to reflect on such a sacrifice as 31 gone forever.

Sweet Nightmares

Like clockwork, I wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and crying; it has been like this for several years. When I lie down, I know that it’s my fate—I will see the man that haunts my dreams.

The dream:

I’m sitting in my car waiting for the light to turn green when I notice a man following me. Nervous and afraid, I speed off and leave him at the light. However, a few minutes later, he’s back again in my rear view mirror. I can’t shake him. My car twists and turns with every corner, but he’s relentless—he’s hot on my trail. “Why is he singling me out? Out of all the men and women in the world, why does he chase after me?” I’m not sure of the reason why, but I’m never slowing down for him to catch up with me. “Uh oh!”  Flat tire. Now, I have no choice; I slow down and meet the man who’s been after me.

I stop the car and bracing myself, I take a long, deep breath and get out of the car. Shortly after, he gets out too. As there is a thick fog overlying our meeting ground, I can barely see him, only a faint silhouette. I stand completely still as he begins to walk forward.  In a matter of seconds, the distance between us no longer exists. Here we are, the two of us, staring straight into each other’s eyes. He’s smiling, but tears begin to well up in my eyes and gently roll down my face. I realize that I know this man. I am ashamed.

End dream—

I wish this dream were really a dream, but it isn’t. The man that chases after me is named Responsibility. He sees me, pursues me, and calls out my name, even though I feel unworthy and undeserving of his attention. “Why do I have to be the one who sacrifices? Why me?” But, out of all the questions and insecurities, the truth is that whether I chose him or not, he [Responsibility] has chosen me.

Have you been running from Responsibility too? Or perhaps his family—Social, Moral or Professional Responsibility? If you have, now is the time to get to know them and embrace them in your life. Move forward!

Most of us can read the writing on the wall; we just assume it’s addressed to someone else.  ~Ivern Ball

Even when we know what is right, too often we fail to act.  More often we grab greedily for the day, letting tomorrow bring what it will, putting off the unpleasant and unpopular.  ~Bernard M. Baruch
